Mathematics

Algebra
This is a full semester course and covers the material necessary for the New York State Integrated Algebra I exam. Topics covered include number theory, operations, variables and expressions, equations and inequalities, patterns, functions and relations. coordinate geometry, trigonometric functions, shapes, organization and display of data, analysis of data and probability. Students will develop the skills necessary to be successful on the regents and other future math courses. Exit activity: Integrated Algebra I Regents Exam

Advanced Algebra
A semester course designed to strengthen the algebraic skills of the student. Math A topics are continued and expanded. Topics include simplifying polynomials, finding equations of straight lines, solving both linear and quadratic equations and systems of equations, and working with radicals. Exit activity: School Final Exam. Grade Level 11 and 12. Prerequisites: Math A-II or III.

Math B-I
A semester course that continues and expands on topics encountered in Math A. The student will also begin to study geometry in a more extensive way by learning to do formal proofs. Other topics will be logic proofs, solving equations (linear and quadratic), rational expressions, transformational geometry, and quadrilaterals. Exit Activity: School Final Exam. Grade level 10 and 11. Prerequisites: a score of at least 76 on the Math A Regents.

Math B-II
Math B-II finishes the material in the New York State syllabus for this course. Topics from Math A and B1 are reintroduced and developed further. Trigonometry identities, formulas, graphs, and equations are explored. Other topics are logarithms, exponents, probability, statistics, complex numbers, and functions. Exit Activity: Math B Regents. Grade Level 10 and 11. Prerequisites: Math B-I

Precalculus
The course that prepares a student for Calculus. This semester course focuses on the idea of functions. Other topics are: trig functions, polynomials, logarithms, exponents, limits, and the Definition of Derivative. Exit Activity: School Final Exam. Grade Level 11 and 12. Prerequisites: Math B-II

Calculus 1
Calculus 1 is the name given to the first semester of AP Calculus. This is a course that follows

a prescribed syllabus from Princeton Review. This first course covers topics of: functions, limits, derivative formulas, derivative applications of both word problems and graphs. The basic formulas of integration are also included. Exit Activity: School Final Exam. Grade Level 12. Prerequisites: A grade of at least 85 in Precalculus

AP Calculus
The second semester of AP Calculus is given the official name of the course. The topics of the syllabus not covered in the first semester are completed in this one. Integration of various types of functions, applications to area and volume and to graphing are included. Integration of exponential graphs leading to exponential growth and decay are also covered. There is review for the national AP test that is scheduled during the first two weeks of May. Exit Activity: National AP TEST in May (score not reported until July), School Final (so as to have a grade for the report card). Grade Level 12. Prerequisites: Successful Completion of Calculus 1.

Math in the Real World
A semester course that shows the student how mathematics applies to everyday life. Topics include checking accounts, and other bank accounts (including loans and IRA’s), insurances, buying a vehicle, buying a house, credit cards, monthly budget, and how to apply for a job. Exit Activity: School Final Exam. Grade Level 12. No Prerequisites.
